The usage notes seem ambiguous:

> Many other nouns can be substituted for "doorknob", perhaps the oldest being "doornail" [...]

This makes it sound like the original is still doorknob, and the oldest substitute for doorknob is doornail.

What is clearly meant, judging from the rest of the article and other articles of similar phrases, is that doornail is the mot likely original.
