Pronunciation[edit]

The US pronunciation seems to be a bit off, where I live we use the pronunciation given for the UK.—X Parasite 06:15, 18 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I agree, I have never heard detail with the stress on the final syllable in U.S. English. Maybe it’s Canadian? We stress the first syllable in both the verb and the noun. —Stephen 10:15, 18 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I've just heard it on FOX News. (It was not a Canadian.) It struck me as strange, but I don't know very much about US English. It does seem to exist, though. Kolmiel (talk) 23:13, 3 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I don't find at all unfamiliar, but my sense that it's not so much a variant usage of some people, nor a reflection of a different sense of the word, as it may be of a difference in nuance. One aspect worth exploring is to what degree the pronunciation correlates with slight variations in meaning. A parallel, more familiar to me, is my ready grasp that stress on "con" signals a noun while that on "vict" signals a verb, tho perhaps that is a broader pattern of verb and corresponding direct object whose other manifestations, if any, I'd have dig deeper to find. (Do take note that the "detail" variation could have (at least partially) to do with the verb and noun "detail" that share a spelling... ("...eh?", as I think Canadians, and mebbe northern-New-Englanders, are alleged to say, eh? ... Could *that* be a contraction of either "Yeah?" or "Ya' think?" ....

Oh! As WP User:Jerzy, I was WMF-global once that became an option, ages ago, and when I hung up my admin hat in response to incipient dementia, I had forgotten that they made me global as -User:JerzyA, tho I've created no personal Wikt: pages. Hence the redlinked sig! --Wikipedia user:JerzyA JerzyA (talk) 06:31, 16 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
