Words like exterior and extract should not be here, IMO, because they were not formed by adding ex- to an existing English term. Equinox ◑ 06:16, 19 September 2013 (UTC)
I agree with Equinox. The sense of out was probably never productive in English, so it doesn’t really belong here. It might work as a root, but making ‘root’ entries for English would be an innovation. --Æ&Œ (talk) 08:04, 14 September 2014 (UTC)

Some copyeditors have learned to use an en-dash when a hyphenated combining form combines with a compound having a space: ex–brain surgeon --Backinstadiums (talk) 15:48, 7 August 2021 (UTC)
- I couldn't find any guides on how to use ex- with compound phrases. They all say that ex- words are always hyphenated and that's all. It seems that everyone just goes with using former instead. --GareginRA (talk) 05:22, 1 April 2023 (UTC)
