Etymology[edit]

Seems to be from garder and I guess gienne is from Ancient Greek γυνή (gunḗ). Mglovesfun (talk) 10:03, 25 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I seriously doubt it. It seems to just be formed like any other feminine form of a masculine noun; the masculine (cognate to French gardien) ends in a nasal vowel, so the feminine ends in a nasal consonant. There is no second element (unless you count whatever the suffix originally was), though you're right that there is a relationship with garder, from Proto-Germanic *ward-. embryomystic (talk) 02:50, 25 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
