French gobelet, from gober (to swallow).

This might all be true, but couldn't it rather be from Late Latin cupella, whence also German Kübel? The word was apparently borrowed from Old Provencal cubel, so the form in French would not be too unusual. It originally meant a small bucket, and a diminutive of that could easily mean "goblet".
