Prevalence?[edit]

I attended US high schools and universities, and don’t recall hearing this term. A quick Google search returns results from UK, Australia, Canada, Malaysia, Namibia, Singapore, though none from the US. If you’re getting hits from Malaysia and Namibia (and the UK) and not the US, it seems a general Commonwealth term, but wanted to cite specific countries.

Employee of a UK university here: this is absolutely NOT a short-term usage for many, and it can be years between the end of a course and the graduation ceremony. Graduation isn't compulsory, doesn't mean "the end of studies", and many people (the majority) remain in this state for decades. We tend not to use it outside ceremonies, or to third parties, but the definition as given isn't really correct. DCO
