Definition[edit]

Because all the derived terms carry the meaning for this term of "state," should we add the definition "state," and make "it (area) is marked out (with a line around it)" an alternate definition, or the etymology? 71.66.97.228 20:29, 1 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Well, it doesn’t mean state and isn’t a noun, but the names of the U.S. states use it in a way that, to English speakers, has the appearance of meaning state. But I wouldn’t put that in the definition since it doesn’t actually mean that. It just means "it (an area) is marked out". With the U.S. states, it usually is not translated at all, and we put Arizona, Texas, etc., and do not mention that the name refers to a state. —Stephen 21:05, 1 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
