Would it be safe to say that this (and the other case names in Latvian) derive from Latin? They certainly all appear to, but you're the one with the Latvian etymological dictionary. --Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 17:05, 13 August 2012 (UTC)
- I would say that is a safe assumption. —This unsigned comment was added by Leasnam (talk • contribs).
- Indeed it is a safe assumption. (The LEV doesn't mention foreign words, which includes the names of the cases; but the school grammar of Latvian I have does include a 'from Latin' parenthetical comment. It's not a scholarly source, so the author may have been guessing, but I think it's a safe bet that all those case names are ultimately from Latin. (Now, whether or not they came into Latvian via some other language -- say, German -- or were borrowed directly from Latin by the first authors of Latvian grammars in Latvian, that I cannot say.) --Pereru (talk) 11:45, 15 August 2012 (UTC)
