I heard that prison officers were called "Screws" because one of the punishments was for the prisoner to walk on a tread Mill, and the man supervising the prisoner could turn a screw which made walking on the Treadmill harder to turn, thus making the punishment harder, has anyone else heard of this ?

gaoler[edit]

Why is gaoler marked obsolete? I certainly still use goal and gaoler.

Well, evidence? As far as I know it is obsolete. Where is it not obsolete? Where are you from? Mglovesfun (talk) 21:23, 27 December 2012 (UTC)
