I'm trying to think of the use of the word mission that describes a gathering of religious believers in a community, usually part of a large event with a central theme. It's fairly infrequent, only about every ten or so years in any one place. I'm not sure, but think it is a Catholic tradition. Can anyone give this a definition.--Dmol 15:48, 25 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Have added def as best i can recall, but would welcome tweaking of it.--Dmol 10:22, 25 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

WP DictDef[edit]

I've removed this former lead secn the Dab Mission. Perhaps someone will notice something not already covered in the accompanying entry page.

A mission, from the Latin missum (English: sent), is a specific task, often religious, which a person or group has been charged with or adopts as their main purpose. It can also mean a school or other institution founded for religious education and/or evangelization.

Possible missing verb sense: to commission[edit]

Chambers 1908 has a transitive verb sense "(rare) to commission". Good luck, sluts! Equinox 02:39, 13 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

"Mission" olives[edit]

Mission can also refer to a variety of olive.

"Like Spanish seedling oranges, the history of Mission olives in the United States dates to 1775 when Franciscan monks established the missions of San Diego, Santa Clara, and San Jose, and planted orchards of Spanish fruits." ~ source Multiple Mooses (talk) 05:03, 5 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
