"arbitrary" in "An arbitrary word or phrase" was not redundant, though there is probably a better way to express the point.

A key property of names is that they need not carry intrinsic meanng. A miller might be named Miller, but might also be named "Smith".

The first quotation was meant to illustrate this, but may actually undermine it.
