What's the US pronunciation? /ɹɛɹ/ or /ɹɛɚ/? And of rarer? Thanks in advance, Ferike333 19:34, 16 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I think I would describe rare as /ɹæɚ/; bear = /bæɚ/; bare = /bæɚ/; dare = /dæɚ/; fair = /fæɚ/; hair = /hæɚ/; mare = /mæɚ/; pair = /pæɚ/; pear = /pæɚ/; tear = /tæɚ/; wear = /wæɚ/; ware = /wæɚ/. But the word there would be /ðɛɚ/; care = /kɛɚ/; lair = /lɛɚ/.
rarer = /ˈɹæɚ.ɹɚ/. —Stephen 22:06, 16 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. I added the first one you suggested. That looks better to me, but I can't always hear the difference between /æ/ and /ɛ/, unfortunately. I usually tip or feel which is used. Sometimes mistip. So my examples are inauthoritative. Ferike333 19:12, 17 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
