Rfv-sense: to add water to alcoholic spirit to adjust its proof. Is this correct? it is almost an antonym of the second sense "to purify or refine, especially by distillation". --Hekaheka (talk) 23:24, 7 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I did find these citations, but the first one seems to be using the second sense ("distill"), and the second and third citations aren't quite the given sense even if they do generally mean "dilute" rather than "refine" (which it isn't clear they do): they refer to using things other than just water. - -sche (discuss) 07:22, 3 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The 2nd and 3rd citations are not using the meaning "dilute". The wine is being rectified (ie strengthened) by the addition of spirit. It is not the weakening of spirit by the addition of wine. SpinningSpark 19:04, 3 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
That is, all the citations are in the sense of "strengthening", not "weakening". SpinningSpark 10:08, 14 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
