I have deleted the words " usually a quarter of an acre in size" from the definition. I doubt that it would stand up to careful research. The quarter-acre is a popular concept, and perhaps something of an ideal for many New Zealanders, but most sections in New Zealand cities of over 20,000 people would be smaller than this. 1/8 to 1/6 of an acre would be far more common. I undertand that Christchurch has larger sections on average than other cities because of an old law that sections had to be at least 1/6 of an acre. Many older and newer sections are smaller, but most sections of that area remain, as they are too small to subdivide.
It's likely that there are more sections over 1/6 of an acre in smaller towns, and many of these will be around 1/4 acre.
Whatever the statistical facts, the 1/4 acre should not be part of the definition. The section that my house is on is over an acre. This is unusually large, but it is still a section. The section of our previous house was 1/9 of an acre. Koro Neil

Chambers 1908 defines section plane as "a cut surface": I wonder if that means cross section. Equinox ◑ 15:56, 8 August 2019 (UTC)
