We say that in portraiture this means that the subject is "turned away slightly from a frontal view". For comparison, Webster 1913 says that a "three-quarter" portrait is one that measures thirty inches by twenty-five, and that "three-quarter length" designates a portrait "showing the figure to the hips only".
