Talk:used

Maybe a mention that it can be used to indicate past tense in informal conversation. E.g. "used to be" instead of "once was", "used to want to" "once wanted to" and "used to play" instead of "once played" Kanjo Kotr 01:01, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, this is on my to-do list now.

A "used bookshop"[edit]

Nobody writes "used-book shop", but many people write "used bookshop". Our definition doesn't cover this sense (selling pre-owned things). 86.161.31.85 10:30, 26 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It is not always easy to accurately include all senses that components take when used in compounds. If used book shop (more likely spelling ?) were the only collocation with this sense I might add that and even omit a sense at used. Notwithstanding the possible high frequency of the orthography, I think of "used bookshop" as "used book" + "shop" and view "used bookshop" as poor style, slightly confusing and mildly laughable. But this is a descriptive dictionary, only minimally a style guide. I will try to check the different orthographies for relative frequency on COCA and BNC.
