Not according to The New Penguin Dictionary of Abbreviations (2000), the source I cited. Interpreting it as an abbreviation of the English (deprecated template usage) variety rather than of the Latin (deprecated template usage) varietās would explain why (deprecated template usage) var. remains unitalicised in the middle of an otherwise italicised, Latin name (as exemplified in the 1991 supporting quotation for that sense included in the entry). — Raifʻhār Doremítzwr ~ (U · T · C) ~ 12:04, 12 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
