other uses for web bugs[edit]

They may also take the form of a linked uniquely named image placed into an html email message, sometimes 1px/1px, but not necessarily.. for the purpose of determining where/when a specific email message was opened. (as recorded in the web access_log where the image resides.) Not sure how to incorporate this into the definition without becoming encyclopedic, but it is worth noting. --Versageek 18:32, 20 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Needs updating[edit]

Javascript "tags" seem to be the more commonly used technique these days (replacing transparent pixels). Perhaps we could also note the euphemistic (and confusing) use of "tag" in this context. – Jberkel 08:11, 9 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
