Who are these "careful writers"? And who let the prescriptivist in? Perhaps some actual examples of usage for those wild, irresponsible writers among us would be helpful.

Whereby (Comment #2)[edit]

The prescriptivist verbiage under the Usage heading is ripe for deletion. I'm generally averse to deletionism, so I hesitate to pull the trigger myself. I'd rather someone equip the verbiage with a credible reference to some published piece of prescriptionism. --Kent Dominic (talk) 15:58, 22 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

"nonstandard" example sentence?[edit]

The example given for the "nonstandard" definition (#3) strikes me as simply an additional example of the "standard" definition (#2), "by which":

This is an electronic system whereby executives are issued with small bleepers.

I read this as having the exact same meaning as "This is an electronic system by which executives are issued with small bleepers."

So if there indeed is a "nonstandard" contemporary usage then I think it needs a much better example sentence. -12:07, 22 February 2021 (UTC)
