Documentation for Template:af-noun. [edit]
This page contains usage information, categories, interwiki links and other content describing the template.

This template is used to create the headword line of Afrikaans nouns.

This template contains the necessary meta-data to allow users who are using accelerated editing to create any grammatical forms semi-automatically.

Plural[edit]

As the plural cannot be generally predicted from the singular, the template cannot generate one automatically. You always need to provide it; if it's left out, the template will show a notice to point out the missing form. The plural is given with the first parameter. Examples for jaar and appel:

{{af-noun|jare}}
{{af-noun|appels}}

For nouns where the plural is derived from the singular just by adding -e or -s, there is a special shortcut. You give only the ending e or s, rather than the full form. This only works when the stem of the plural is the same (and spelled the same) as the stem of the singular. If there are any changes to the stem, you need to specify the full plural form. So for jaar it would not work, because the stem loses a vowel in the plural, jar-e. Examples for appel and mens:

{{af-noun|s}}
{{af-noun|e}}

If the noun has no plural form, but occurs only in the singular, specify - as the plural. On sterrekunde:

{{af-noun|-}}

If the noun occurs only in the plural, and has no corresponding singular, specify p as the plural. On harsings:

{{af-noun|p}}

Some nouns may have more than one possible plural form. To specify the second plural, use |pl2=. Like on aanbieding:

{{af-noun|wysigings|pl2=wysiginge}}

In the case of nouns ending in -ing that are usually pluralized with -s, but also have a dated plural in -e, use the parameter s/e:

{{af-noun|s/e}}

Diminutive[edit]

If the noun has a diminutive form, it is given with the second parameter. For example, jaar and appel, but this time with the diminutive added too:

{{af-noun|jare|jaartjie}}
{{af-noun|appels|appeltjie}}

If there is no diminutive, just leave it out.

Gendered forms[edit]

The parameters |f= and |m= are used to specify another form of the word that is used for a person of the opposite gender. This is typically used for words indicating professions, but also for others. For example, vriendin:

{{af-noun|vriendinne|vriendinnetjie|m=vriend}}

And conversely, on vriend:

{{af-noun|vriende|vriendjie|f=vriendin}}
