langname= is superfluous[edit]
- This template has been deleted. This discussion has been kept for historical interest.
Language name can easily be obtained by postfixing ISO-639 code onto "Template:lang:" stem, and then taking the contents out of "Template:lang:xx". E.g., if we already have Template:lang:cu with the content of "Old Church Slavonic", it can safely be assumed as the default value for the langname parameter. I suppose it can easily be completely eliminated, docs concordantly updated, and then some bot can do the magic with zillion categories left using it? --Ivan Štambuk 23:08, 6 January 2008 (UTC)

- I created this template so that etymology specific info could be added to the top of the Etymology categories. The

- I miss the function which the nav template provides for the mother (i.e. English language) category. See for instance Category:Greek derivations where the foreign language sub-categories don't show in the first screen. __meco 08:11, 5 February 2008 (UTC)

Deprecation[edit]
This template is in the process of being deprecated. It was originally intended that this template would serve as a temporary stop-gap until {{nav}} could be updated soi that it could handle the complexity of the Etymology categories. The template {{topic cat}} can handle the Etymology categories but requires template sub pages to be created. I am currently busy doing this and hope to formally deprecate {{dercatboiler}} and {{dercatnav}} once finished.
For the time being, both templates can be used and I will get around to sorting out all of the categories in due course. --Williamsayers79 18:03, 15 April 2008 (UTC)
