Ultimately from Thai ไทย (“Thai”). The tone on "Thái" was influenced by the Sino-Vietnamese reading of 泰 (SV thái), the character which was part of the Chinese name 泰國 (Tàiguó, "Thailand"). "Lan" is by analogy with other Sino-Vietnamese countries names containing "Lan" (e.g. Ba Lan - 波蘭 ("Poland"), Phần Lan - 芬蘭 ("Finland")), which is from Chinese 蘭 (lán), which was used to transcribe -land in European country names.
