Etymology[edit]
From Middle High German topāʒje, topāʒe, topaʒīus m or n, from Late Latin topāzius f, topāzion n, topāzōn m, from Classical topāzus f, topāzos f, from Ancient Greek τοπάζιον n (topázion), τόπαζος m (tópazos), probably named after Τόπαζος (Tópazos), ancient name of St. John's Island, Egypt, in the Red Sea, believed to be the first discovered source of the mineral peridot.
