See lai(Cantonese:師奶) is the term referring to married women in Southern China, especially in Hong Kong. This term is originally a neutral term used everyday. Mothers, for example, encourage their children to greet their neighbours by saying "Say Hi to surname see lai". Starting from mid-1990s, the term has gained negative connotations.

The February 3, 2006 issue of HK Magazine, published a letter (apparently from a woman) to the editor complaining about the annoying behaviour of several "see lai" in a local gym. From her letter, it seems there are some common opinions about "see lai" in Hong Kong:

  • They ignore the rules or common practice
  • They like gossiping
  • They care about some amount of money, and are eager to earn such small benefits from shops

Starting from 2000s, more and more "see lai"-like women come out from home to public to fight for the rights of local citizens. These women was seen as figure person to change common opinions towards "see lai". Some of these women are listed below:
