Borrowed from Latin trapezium, from Ancient Greek τραπέζιον (trapézion, irregular quadrilateral, literally a little table), diminutive of τράπεζα (trápeza, table), itself from τρά- (trá-, four) + πέζα (péza, foot, edge).
