English[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From free +‎ . +‎ 99; due to psychological pricing, prices of goods and services are often dropped by one cent to be slightly under a round number, so that the resulting price, ending in 99 cents, may be perceived by consumers as lower than it really is. Free replaces what would normally be the dollar amount in a price.
