Optimal citations should:

  • Not introduce unnecessary complexity. The grammar and vocabulary should not be any more complex than necessary.
  • Be unambiguous. There should be no room for doubt as to the exact sense in which the headword is used.
  • Be authentic. Second-hand portrayals of dialect speech etc. should be avoided when possible.
  • Be prominent. All other things being equal, a quotation from a well-known author and work is preferable to a quotation from a less prominent source.
