The acid-insoluble, SDS-soluble (without dithiothreitol) organic matrices from the nacreous layer were separated into four fractions by means of gel filtration high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) (fig. S5), and each fraction was subjected to SDS-PAGE. SDS-PAGE under reducing conditions revealed that Pif 80 and Pif 97 were recovered as major components in fraction 2, which also contained a part of N16, a major protein in the nacreous layer ( 25 ), whereas SDS-PAGE under nonreducing conditions revealed that these proteins formed a high-molecular-weight complex ( Fig. 4A ).

As this layer is of the utmost importance for an understanding of hydrological cycles, we apply a previously overlooked technique to obtain global information with high sensitivity near the ground by retrieving from short-wave infrared spectra recorded by the SCIAMACHY (Scanning Imaging Absorption Spectrometer for Atmospheric Chartography) instrument ( 24 ) aboard the European Space Agency (ESA)’s environmental research satellite ENVISAT. Owing to the large spectral displacement of rotational-vibrational transitions of HDO, it exhibits absorption lines distinct from those of H 2 O. In a wavelength window ranging from 2355 to 2375 nm, this enables a simultaneous retrieval of HDO and H 2 O vertical column densities (equivalent to total precipitable water), denoted as VCD [see ( 25 ) for more information on retrieval procedures, instrumental details, data quality criteria, potential problems over the oceans, and precision estimates].

The first indication of flatness ( 13 ) has progressed to the current measurement that the Universe is flat to 1% accuracy; (iii) the temperature fluctuations should display only a slight deviation from the preinflation conjecture of equal power on all angular scales, and just such a small deviation is now observed with nearly 3 significance; (iv) inflation should have driven adiabatic fluctuations to superhorizon scales, and these should have later re-entered the horizon synchronized in-phase across the sky in a series of acoustic oscillations of the temperature anisotropy.

As the authors conclude, "The scale of the undermatch phenomenon among students from modest backgrounds suggests that addressing this problem offers a real opportunity to increase social mobility and simultaneously to increase overall levels of educational attainment."
