Welcome!

Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contribution so far. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

  • How to edit a page is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.
  • Entry layout explained (ELE) is a detailed policy documenting how Wiktionary pages should be formatted. All entries should conform to this standard, the easiest way to do this is to copy exactly an existing page for a similar word.
  • Our Criteria for inclusion (CFI) define exactly which words Wiktionary is interested in including, there is also a list of things that Wiktionary is not for a higher level overview.
  • The FAQ aims to answer most of your remaining questions, and there are several help pages that you can browse for more information.
  • We have discussion rooms in which you can ask any question about Wiktionary or its entries, a glossary of our technical jargon, and some hints for dealing with the more common communication issues.

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wiktionarian! If you have any questions, bring them to the Wiktionary:Information desk, or ask me on my talk page. If you do so, please sign your posts with four tildes: ~~~~ which automatically produces your username and the current date and time.

Again, welcome! --EncycloPetey 17:22, 15 August 2009 (UTC)

Parentheses[edit]

When you add a translation, please include the word to be translated, exactly as it will appear in a page name. Do not include parentheses ( ) as part of a translation. --EncycloPetey 17:22, 15 August 2009 (UTC)

Extra work for you[edit]

Hi there. Have you seen Category:Translation requests (Italian) and Category:Translations to be checked (Italian)? Lots of work there for someone. Cheers SemperBlotto 21:20, 26 August 2009 (UTC)

Minimum formatting[edit]

When you create a new page, please always include (1) the language header, (2) the part of speech, (3) the inflection line, (4) a definition. some of your recent edits include only item (4), which means they may be deleted. --EncycloPetey 16:30, 27 September 2009 (UTC)

Proverbs, formatting[edit]

When you create a new Italian proverb page, could you please include (1) the Level 2 language header "== Italian ==", (2) the Level 3 part of speech header "=== Proverb ===", (3) the inflection line, e.g. {{infl|it|proverb}}, (4) the definition? Several of your recent edits contain only item (4). —AugPi (t) 18:45, 27 September 2009 (UTC)

Second notice: if you don't format entries correctly I will block you. —AugPi (t) 18:49, 27 September 2009 (UTC)

braccio della legge[edit]

Why did you remove all the content? —Internoob (DiscCont) 00:10, 6 March 2011 (UTC)

Gender[edit]

Italian nouns have gender (m or f). To specify this in {{infl}}, use g=m or g=f. You can also use {{it-noun}}, but if you don't feel comfortable using it, use infl as you have been doing. Mglovesfun (talk) 18:31, 20 March 2011 (UTC)

serrare le fila, fare quadrato, serrare i ranghi[edit]

I think these are verbs, not nouns. Nadando 21:22, 21 March 2011 (UTC)

verbs[edit]

Don't forget {{infl|it|verb|head= for verbs. You are adding them as nouns. SemperBlotto 17:42, 22 March 2011 (UTC)

iposplenismo[edit]

Does not start with a capital letter. Do you think you could learn how to use the it-noun and it-adj templates? SemperBlotto 17:48, 22 March 2011 (UTC)

rubare la scena[edit]

It should look like this, most of all, please include the ==Italian== at the start, that's vital for obvious reasons. Mglovesfun (talk) 14:50, 14 May 2011 (UTC)

Italian translations,[edit]

Please try to add {{trans-top}}, {{trans-mid}} and {{trans-bottom}} when they are missing. Thanks Conrad.Irwin 02:00, 5 June 2011 (UTC)

Headers[edit]

You've been creating a lot of badly-formatted entries lately. Here's a reminder (see WT:ELE for all the details):

Every language section starts with a language section:

==Italian==

Which gives:

Italian

You'll notice this has two equal signs on either side, which makes it a level 2 header (L2 for short).

===Etymology===

and part of speech headers such as

===Noun===

Are level 3 headers, because they're included within the language section. They give:

Etymology

and

Noun

All of this is very basic: you've been doing this for four years, so you should have learned it by now. I'm sorry if I sound grumpy, but correcting your entries is getting old. Thanks, Chuck Entz (talk) 22:34, 29 September 2013 (UTC)

Lua Program Lingo[edit]

I did some surgical editing of your latest proverb entry. --Lo Ximiendo (talk) 19:51, 6 November 2013 (UTC)

fronte di temporali[edit]

See my edit: gender and plural are compulsory parameters! edit. JamesjiaoTC 20:23, 10 February 2014 (UTC)

gorgoglìo[edit]

De Mauro and Zingarelli both spell it gorgoglio (but show that the stress is on the "i". SemperBlotto (talk) 20:24, 13 February 2014 (UTC)

guardia_di_finanza[edit]

What is a 'revenue guard' exactly? I don't quite understand the English. JamesjiaoTC 20:32, 17 March 2014 (UTC)

Thanks. Looks so much better now. JamesjiaoTC 21:58, 18 March 2014 (UTC)

Headword-line templates[edit]

Please don't forget to include a headword-line template with the entries you create, like at da sempre or da una vita. If it's missing, the entry won't be categorised and will end up in Special:UncategorizedPages, which is an error and others will have to fix it. —CodeCat 21:47, 18 March 2014 (UTC)

Synonyms[edit]

Please learn how to spell this word. SemperBlotto (talk) 16:43, 3 April 2014 (UTC)

legami[edit]

I don't know what you tried to do here, but the entry got mixed up quite a bit. Can you fix it? —CodeCat 18:55, 24 May 2014 (UTC)

[[luce]][edit]

Please do not create links with slashes inside. This suggests to people to create entries with those titles, which is against current practice. Entries are titled with only one version of a phrase. (Also, slashes without bracketing are ambiguous.) Links should point to individual versions of whole phrases. Keφr 17:56, 1 June 2014 (UTC)

ad protestatore[edit]

Synonyms sections are for synonyms in the same language, not in English. Keφr 17:12, 6 June 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for your obvious remark.

"all senses"[edit]

You should avoid using this, as it's not specific which senses are actually intended. It's better to say which senses. —CodeCat 18:01, 20 June 2014 (UTC)

Babel[edit]

Could you add {{Babel}} to your user page? I'd appreciate it. --Dan Polansky (talk) 21:29, 28 June 2014 (UTC)
