The definition seems pretty good to me. The Bristol and Avon Family History Society had their annual one just last month - and I believe that is what it was. Maybe "party" isn't quite the right word, but it is definitely a similar sort of social gathering.

wordnet.princeton.edu/perl/webwn defines it as "(Briticism) a grand formal party on an important occasion " - I wouldn't say it was grand.
