Idiom categories[edit]

I had been removing [[Category:English idioms]] and adding {{idiom}} to the beginning of the idiomatic definition(s). The template should add the note "idiomatic" to the definition and automatically add the correct category. That said, the template has changed somewhat since the last time I looked. When I have a few more moments, I'll take another look at it and make sure it's still doing what it should.

I got the old English idioms category down to only idioms beginning with O and P, so anything else has been added since then, and we should probably remind any regular contributors who are guilty not to add to this category, unless we want an ongoing job cleaning it out. Thanks for helping with this bit of cleanup. --Dvortygirl 05:30, 7 June 2006 (UTC)

{{idiom}}[edit]

Please, if you notice this template broken again, tell someone; i.e. post a message about it on the beer parlour or information desk or something. I've fixed it for now, but I'm unhappy that it stopped working correctly. --Connel MacKenzie T C 02:06, 8 June 2006 (UTC)

E-mail[edit]

As soon as you signed off IRC, I thought of a specific question for you. Could you enable your e-mail here, please? (I use only a spamgourmet.com alias for mine...many use gmail or other throw-away addresses for Wiki e-mail accounts.) --Connel MacKenzie 05:20, 12 July 2006 (UTC)

Harley Davidson[edit]

What is Hog, and how is it derived from Harley Davidson? (The motorbike has a hyphen). SemperBlotto 07:37, 22 August 2006 (UTC)

It should go with Harley-Davidson, A Harley-Davidson motorcycle commonly referred to a Hog or just a Harley.

redwoods[edit]

Thank you. Unfortunately there is no right way to do this. The en-noun template creates a redlink, and to get rid of this one has to something. A redirect is the safest and easiest way to deal with this. Brya 09:23, 24 August 2006 (UTC)

Pitjantjatjara[edit]

I don't have resources on Pitjantjatjara specifically, but they look real enough. mai in particular has related words in other languages that I am familiar with (e.g. Guugu Yimidhirr mayi). --Ptcamn 07:22, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

Gracias! Thanks! Tak! Merci! Danke! Hvala! Kiitos even![edit]

File:Ferret in fedora.jpg
Ferret! In a fedora! Amazing!

Thanks for all of your hard work, especially all of the vandalism reverts I have noticed that you did while I wasn't looking. Here is a picture of a ferret wearing a fedora, ferrets love wikt and hate vandals and so they are willing to pose in hats for vandal fighters' viewing pleasure :) - TheDaveRoss 07:04, 12 September 2006 (UTC)

Hello[edit]

The dot i've put in the word means its sylabic division. The German wiktionary and the Lusophone one use dots for this function. Is this not used in this wiktionary? Thank you for the "welcome"! LipeFontoura 03:47, 22 September 2006 (UTC)

(syllabic divisions) We don't use any syllabic divisions outside of the pronunciation section. In the pronunciation section, syllabification should be done according to the pronunciation representation you are using (IPA, SAMPA primarily, AHD less often). The inflection line is simply the word. --Versageek 04:08, 22 September 2006 (UTC)

Formats and templates[edit]

Hi, Versageek. Thanks for formatting my fast company definition. [1] I learned a lot from your precise and detailed reworking of the definition, especially your "commented out" section. :-) --Ed Poor 14:53, 11 October 2006 (UTC)

AWB changes to Han characters[edit]

See WT:BP discussion, we are debating whether the common meanings are useful, and whether they are a copyvio. At this exact moment, the template isn't displaying them. Robert Ullmann 15:20, 20 October 2006 (UTC)

At Wiktionary:Beer parlour#Han characters 2. We are planning on changing the template (and the Han ref template) to do whatever we decide on. Meanwhile, we aren't deleting any information! Robert Ullmann 15:22, 20 October 2006 (UTC)

The bot code has been extended to address some of Connel's concerns about language sections needing def lines, and to format as much of the non-standard stuff in the entries as reasonably possible. I'd appreciate comments. Robert Ullmann 23:31, 5 November 2006 (UTC)

Thanks....[edit]

for the nice welcome! It was great to receive such a warm welcome to Wiktionary. If you ever need anything over on enWiki, feel free to drop me a line. Alphachimp 02:05, 27 October 2006 (UTC)

Pupster21[edit]

Why did you rev. me? I'm only adding links!!!--Pupster21 23:36, 30 November 2006 (UTC) I agree. I forgot that from Wikipedia.lol.--Pupster21 23:40, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

Sysop[edit]

What are peoples requirements for sysop's here. Would they elect someone who only does RC patroling? Also is there barnstars here. If not how can you make them? Have a nice week and god bless.--Sir James Paul 19:40, 10 December 2006 (UTC)

Wizzrobe definition[edit]

Why did you delete this word? Wiki Kong 05:40, 28 December 2006 (UTC

it really is harder[edit]

Thanks, Versageek..........boy this place is hard to figure out! I will probably have many questions as I go along.

I had to edit this message to get it right. And all my sources have been telling me that wikis are just so incredibly easy to use.........KnowItSome 05:53, 4 January 2007 (UTC)

I am probably doing something wrong here.........

yes, I DID do something wrong........had to revise to get the sig right. I feel that I have been misinformed by my compatriots who have been telling me so much about wikis having to be so easy or they will never work.

I think I am going to like it here.

Thanks[edit]

thanks for cleaning up my astonishments entry.........i will learn........

I guess I won't have to be applying a chatter template to your page.....looks like I am following my own post of some time ago......things are a bit more serious here, it seems..... good!

Votes[edit]

Don;t forget that all votes need to be cross-posted on WT:VOTE. I've taken care of this for the nomination you proposed. --EncycloPetey 15:11, 3 February 2007 (UTC)

IP block of 82.42.237.84[edit]

Please unblock the IP address 82.42.237.84, the one I'm editing from now. Unfortunately a friend got on the computer, found Wiktionary in my favorites toolbar, and created a spoof spambot page.

He won't do it again: please unblock the IP, the problem is resolved. --Sunstar 02:10, 4 February 2007 (UTC)

Runaway admin?[edit]

I noticed in the logs you had a disgruntled admin user that went awry and deleted the main page and blocked every other admin as a way to show he was "going out with a bang". What was his claim against the site? I'm amazed as to wondering what would drive an established user to become an arsonist in a matter of days. Wiki Kong 03:55, 7 February 2007 (UTC)

He got too drunk and decided he wanted to be desysopped. He didn't start blocking other admins until he decided we weren't responding to his desysop request fast enough (all stewards were preoccupied at Wikimania.) His blocking didn't slow us down at all, it was just obnoxious. --Connel MacKenzie 14:35, 7 February 2007 (UTC)

Confusion about alternative spellings[edit]

Thanks a ton for all your work patrolling recent changes :) Please help me understand Template:alternate spelling of. I added an explicit category:Alternative spellings to it, so that I could look at a list of alternative spellings. You deleted that and said it was already there. I can't see it there... (I'm sure it must be there in some more subtle way, forgive me if I am a newbie:-) But here's the really confusing part.

  • Of the articles which use the template and don't explicitly use "Category:Alternative spelling" by themselves, some have the category tag and some do not. For example at the time I'm writing this, behoove and seraphin use the template, but don't get the tag. But griffin and runoff get the tag, apparently from just using the template.  ?_?
  • Furthermore, at the time I write this, Category:Alternative spellings only actually contains words which explicitly use "Category:Alternative spellings" (whether or not they use the template).

Thanks for any help you can give in explaining this. Maybe you can even help teach me how to set it up so EVERY word (or at least every English word) that uses the template, gets put in the category.  :-) Danke!!  :-)

thanks[edit]

Thanks for the welcome Versageek. JeterThrower 00:06, 15 February 2007 (UTC) (hard to get used to the tilda thing).

national archives[edit]

Hi,

I noticed you just deleted two entries and was wondering if you could also delete national archives which has been listed for speedy deletion for a while. Thanks, Timw. 04:15, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

deleted, thanks :) --Versageek 04:29, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for moving entry[edit]

You did it so fast I didn't get a chance to mark it for automatic deletion. (Bot, or you're just fast?) :-) ArielGlenn 02:56, 22 April 2007 (UTC)

Cross wiki vandal issues[edit]

Hi a passing vandal fighter mentioned that you might be interested in some cross wiki vandal IPs. If you take a look at this it would be worth checking you logs to see they are blocked in a way you think is appropriate. If you want more info do let me know (it is one of those things I feel strongly about - control of cross wiki vandalism - hope you don't mind). Cheers --Herby talk thyme 07:21, 24 May 2007 (UTC)

CheckUser[edit]

Hi, I was wondering if you'd consider accepting a nomination for CheckUser. Thanks! DAVilla 08:52, 15 August 2007 (UTC)

Sure, I'd be happy to help out with CheckUser tasks. I'm a CheckUser on wikiHow, so I'm familiar with the tool and how to interpret the data it provides. --Versageek 21:07, 15 August 2007 (UTC)
Hey, that's great! Right now Connel is the only one who's really active. I'll be making a few other nominations, so your experience will be invaluable. DAVilla 22:02, 15 August 2007 (UTC)

Thanks[edit]

definition of ownership[edit]

The definition of ownership being synonymous with ownage is valid. see http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=ownership

68.147.32.114

Here on Wiktionary, entries in urbandictionary.com are not considered a valid reference/citation, if you can find usage of the term "ownage" in context, in 3 accepted sources - such as Google's Book Search or main stream media web sites (not blogs/forums), it may be re-entered. --Versageek 14:29, 26 November 2007 (UTC)

User:Athang1504 and etymologies[edit]

I have left a message on his talk page, taking your suggestions and advice into account. Thanks again. ArielGlenn 21:52, 16 December 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the cleanup[edit]

Thanks for fixing my talk page. I suspect that 76.91.181.229 is probably the same person as 76.91.182.16 based on the IP range. I'm kind of surprised at the persistence of their grudge... Mike Dillon 05:52, 24 March 2008 (UTC)

I am currently disscussing it at the Beer Parlour[edit]

Where did you get that i wasnt? The7DeadlySins 04:55, 29 June 2008 (UTC) Oh, and p.s: Please nominate my bot at WP:VOTE.

You posted a request at the Beer Parlor, there hasn't been any discussion.. --Versageek 05:00, 29 June 2008 (UTC)

New number template[edit]

Please have a look at {{cardinalbox}} and let me know what you think. I've devoted more than 9 hours to it today, in addition to planning the basic design well ahead of time. Of course, it shouldn't be used yet, except for testing, because it may continue to change with additional suggestions. --EncycloPetey 05:21, 29 June 2008 (UTC)

Hey[edit]

I posted the code on the SinBot code page, now how do i activate the bot so it may do what i asked it to do? The7DeadlySins 18:21, 29 June 2008 (UTC)

Wiktionary:Transwiki log[edit]

Hi Versageek. I have this morning noticed and added your recent Transwiki contributions to the list, here: Wiktionary:Transwiki log. If you Transwiki words in, can you also list them here for the record? Thanks! Goldenrowley 20:06, 9 August 2008 (UTC)

oops! I knew there was a reason I really liked the bot.. the process has way too many steps for a human! Unfortunately, Special:Import is still borked, it works sometimes & not others.. so the bot can't run with any reliability. If I do anymore of them, I'll be sure to add to the log page. --Versageek 04:43, 10 August 2008 (UTC)

User:Jon Awbrey[edit]

You may wish to watchlist this page; the user has been reverting link removals across many wikis. The page may need protecting in the future, or perhaps blocking the user. Thanks for your attentiveness. – Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 22:25, 10 September 2008 (UTC)

I forgot to link to the discussion, though I'm sure you can find it: m:Talk:Spam blacklist#Jon Awbrey and JonAwbrey. – Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 00:07, 11 September 2008 (UTC)

I'm confused...[edit]

As per Wiktionary:News for editors, {{see}} should no longer be used (apparently), and has instead been replaced by {{also}}. However, the latter is a redirect to the former (though the talk pages redirect in the proper direction).

I was going to try to update some of the transclusions, only to find that they were already done, with the exception of certain templates (that would cause the transclusions without showing up in the edit text). I reverted the lone edit I'd made so far on it out of fear of creating double redirect and breaking stuff.

What's the deal? EVula // talk // 16:06, 8 October 2008 (UTC)

There are some 42000+ uses of {see} or {also}. AutoFormat is presently fixing them as it goes about doing other things. The idea was or is to wait until about 1/2 of them are done, and then reverse the redirect. (which is probably about due now)
Templates that redirect to {see} will then be fixed; templates that use {see} can be changed to {also} at any point. Robert Ullmann 16:18, 8 October 2008 (UTC)

Your reversion[edit]

Hello, I made a good-faith contribution to an entry (sand nigger) and you just reverted it with no explanation. The hidden comment was made because for some reason the "Discussion" page is disabled. My comment was made in an effort to stimulate further improvement in the entry and, as such, it doesn't improve the entry to remove it. Did my addition appear as vandalism? I certainly hope not, as I phrased it in a very careful manner. Thank you for your consideration. 24.29.228.33 06:08, 4 December 2008 (UTC)

My apologies for not explaining. I reverted you because html comments on the same line as a header interfere with our formatting bots which parse entries on a regular basis. It was my intent to go find some citations in response to your request.. but I fell asleep before completing the task.. I have since entered those citations, they may be found here.

m:Wiktionary/logo/refresh/voting[edit]

I do not want to come across as contumelious but please consider casting your vote for the tile logo as—besides using English—the book logo has a clear directionality of horizontal left-to-right, starkly contrasting with Arabic and Chinese, two of the six official UN languages. As such, the tile logo is the only translingual choice left and it was also elected in m:Wiktionary/logo/archive-vote-4.
