Luxembourgish[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From a contraction of Old High German wīngarto. Compare the same in regional German Wingert alongside uncontracted Weingarten. English vineyard is the same construct. In Luxembourgish, Wéngert secondarily joins itself to Wéng-, which is a velarized alternate stem of Wäin (wine); compare the diminutive Wéngchen.

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): /ˈveŋert/, [ˈveŋɐt]

Noun[edit]
