The aim of this page is to explain the norms used in Võro language entries. It is intented to complement, not supersede, WT:CFI and WT:ELE.

About[edit]

Võro belongs to the Finnic languages group, which belongs to the Uralic languages group. It has traditionally been considered a dialect of the South Estonian dialect group of the Estonian language, but nowadays it has its own literary language and is in search of official recognition as an autochthonous regional language of Estonia. Võro has about 70,000 speakers (Võros) mostly in south-eastern Estonia.

Orthography and alternative forms[edit]

Võro spelling is somewhat standardised, but some differences in prescription and practice exist. Wiktionary follows the conventions for Võro as they are used by the Võro-eesti-võro synaraamat:

  • The vowel y is distinguished from õ.
  • Palatalisation is indicated by an apostrophe after the letter.
  • The glottal stop is indicated with q.

Wiktionary also allows spellings that do not follow these rules. In particular, many Võro-language texts do not include palatalisation marks, and the letter y is often written as õ instead. Any spelling variants should be included with {{alternative spelling of|...|lang=vro}}, and link back to Wiktionary's standard spelling. If different forms also represent a different pronunciation, then use {{alternative form of|...|lang=vro}} instead.
