From Middle High German zügel, zugel, from Old High German zugil, from Proto-Germanic *tugilaz (rein on a horse),[1] whence also Old Norse tygill, Old English tygel, Dutch teugel. Ultimately derives from Proto-Indo-European *dewk-.
