German[edit]

Etymology[edit]

ab- +‎ schreiten

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): /ˈapˌʃraɪ̯tən/, [ˈʔäpˌʃʁäɪ̯tn̩]
  • (file)

Verb[edit]

abschreiten (class 1 strong, third-person singular present schreitet ab, past tense schritt ab, past participle abgeschritten, auxiliary haben or sein)

  1. (transitive) to pace or stride along (walk slowly along some path, as an officer inspecting a line of soldiers)
  2. (transitive) to step off; to pace off (measure by steps)

Usage notes[edit]

  • As a transitive verb, prescriptive grammar requires this to be construed with haben. In practice, it is also construed with sein like the simplex schreiten.
