From Latin offocāre, present active infinitive of offocō (I strangle), from ob- + fauces (throat).

ahogar (first-person singular present ahogo, first-person singular preterite ahogué, past participle ahogado)

  1. (transitive) to drown (kill by immersion in water)
  2. (transitive) to stifle
  3. (reflexive) to suffocate (suffer or die from severely reduced oxygen)

  4. (reflexive) to drown (be suffocated in water)
