From Proto-Germanic *akraną, perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *h₂ógeh₂- (berry). Cognate with Old English æcern (English acorn, Old Frisian akern, Dutch aker, Old Norse akarn (Danish agern), Old High German ackeran (German Ecker).
