Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Albanian *auK-(ul-), from Proto-Indo-European *Houk ‘cold, frost’. Cognate to Armenian ոյծ (oyc, cold, frost)[1]. Also compare Hittite eka (ice), Latvian auksts. Possible relation to Germanic* jakulaz 'ice, glacier' (cf. Old Norse jaki, jǫkull (glacier)) is uncertain.
