alkenone (plural alkenones)

  1. (organic chemistry) Any unsaturated aliphatic ketone.
  2. (biochemistry) Any long-chain di-, tri- and tetra- unsaturated methyl and ethyl ketones that are synthesized by a limited number of haptophyte microalgae; the degree of unsaturation is a function of the water temperature.
