Etymology[edit]

Pseudo-Grecism, from amok + -o- + Ancient Greek σχίζω (skhízō, to split) + -ia. Schmidt (1984), who probably coined the term, gives the derivation as "amuck[sic] (in a state of frenzy) + schizo (slit)".[1]
