Variant of onslaught, perhaps due to Middle English sleight, sleȝt, slæht, from Old English sleht, slieht, sleaht (stroke, striking, slaughter, murder, death), from Proto-Germanic *slahtiz (hitting, beating, killing, murder), from Proto-Indo-European *slak- (to hit, hammer).
