From Proto-Albanian *aruā, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂rh₃uer-, from root *h₂rh₃ 'arable land, soil'; compare *h₂erh₃- (to plough). Cognate to Latin arvum (corn-field), Ancient Greek ἄρουρα (ároura, arable land).
