From Proto-Ugric *θarańa (gold, copper), earlier *sarańa, compare Komi зарни (zarni, gold), Mansi [script?] (tarəń), Khanty [script?] (lorńə, copper). The Ugric word is probably a borrowing of Iranian origin, compare Avestan [script?] (zaranya-), Old Persian [script?] (daraniya-), Persian زر (zar, gold).
