Etymology[edit]

From ator- +‎ -vastatin (HMG CoA reductase inhibitor). The prefix probably from Spanish atorar (to clog), wherein the verb suffix -ar was taken off. Thus, the role is "to inhibit the clogging (of cholesterol)".
