Auf Wiedersehen more literally translates as "when we see again", or "until we see again", very close to the English informal "see you later" or the French "au revoir".
(Auf- on, upon (when): Wieder- again: Sehen- to see, seeing)
Auf Wiedersehen is fairly formal in German; it is unlikely to be used between close friends and family members. It is usually used only with people one would address as Sie, not with those one would address as du.
