From Proto-Indo-European *h₂ewg-. Cognates include Proto-Germanic *aukaną, Ancient Greek αὐξάνω, Lithuanian augti, and, via Iranian, Old Armenian վաշխ (vašx). Akin to English eke, Swedish öka, Danish øge, and Gothic 𐌰𐌿𐌺𐌰𐌽 (aukan).
