Etymology[edit]

Sino-Vietnamese word from (hundred) and (sound, voice).

Semantically, compare Japanese 百舌 (mozu, shrike), where both the actual etymology and the consequent spelling contain an element meaning "hundred". Compare also Chinese 伯勞伯劳 (bóláo, shrike), where the first element can be read in Sino-Vietnamese as bách (aside from the more common ).
