Etymology[edit]

From Middle English bedene, bidene, of uncertain origin. Believed to be a formation of bid-, alteration (perhaps through conflation with Middle English mid (with) or with) of bi (by) + ene (once), from Old English ǣne (once, at once), related to Old English ān (one), equivalent to be- +‎ one.
