Etymology 1[edit]

Inherited from Middle French bigne, from Old French bigne, buyne (lump), from Frankish *bungjo (a swelling, lump, bump). Unlike other loans, the vowel *-u- is umlauted to *-ü- and then -i-, compare broigne which does not undergo umlaut. (For more details, see the entry for beignet.).
