From Proto-Germanic *basją, of uncertain origin. Cognate with Old Saxon beri (Dutch bes), Old High German beri (German Beere), Old Norse ber, Gothic -𐌱𐌰𐍃𐌹 (in 𐍅𐌴𐌹𐌽𐌰𐌱𐌰𐍃𐌹 ‘grape’).
